Tikao Bay
(the locals pronounce it "Tee-cow") is set on the western
side of Akaroa Harbour, between French Farm Bay And Wainui Bay.
It is partially bush clad and has about 27 holiday homes and 9 permanent
residences within it. It is a very peaceful place, and the bird
song in the morning and during the day is very beautiful. There
is good safe swimming and the fishing is good too. Most of the people
who live here permanently are retired, but recently one or two younger
couples have moved to live here and commute to work in Christchuch
and Akaroa.
Ian and I met here back in the 1960's and have been in love
with the place ever since. Our home started as the Telfer family
bach (or Holiday Home) and we returned to it each Christmas and
Easter for family holidays.
Back in the mid-nineties we built on an extra two bedrooms over
a double garage and joined it internally to the older part which
was originally built by Ian and his Dad in 1955. Then in 1998 we
decided to retire down to here from our home in Wellington. Another
extension was added on and the "Bach" became our home.
We have two grown up children, one living in the North Island and
one in the United States, and three very
spoilt pussy cats who live with us.
Our home is one minute's walk from a 30ft water fall and the stream
runs right along beside the house. We are two minutes walk to the
beach and have three small sail boats for
fooling around in. You can even try your hand at fishing.
Some of the walks around the area are quite magnificent with wonderful
views out over the harbour. There is also an excellent restaurant
at the French Farm Vinyard, just 2 kms away. The Duvauchelle Pub
is the locals' watering hole and a very popular place in the summer
for light meals etc. We also have a very special boutique cheese
factory in Barry's Bay.
The Akaroa Township, which is directly
across the harbour from us is 20 minutes away by car and is a delightful
and very popular tourist spot, originally settled by the French
about 160 years ago. The township retains its French flavour and
some of the old homesteads are exceedingly picturesque and well
worth the visit.
Ian and I decided to open our home as a Bed and Breakfast establishment,
as we enjoy meeting people from all walks of life, and entertaining
them in "Our Bay". We met here, married, and came back
here to retire. What better reference can we offer. We love it here
and we know you will too.
